Sedation for nervous patients

Sedation may help if you:

  • Feel anxious just thinking about a dental appointment
  • Have put off treatment for years because of fear
  • Have a strong gag reflex or find it hard to sit still
  • Need a longer or more complex procedure, such as implants or extractions

Calm and relaxed

Sedation reduces anxiety so treatment feels much more manageable.

More done in one visit

Because you're relaxed, it's often possible to complete more treatment in a single appointment.

Little memory of treatment

Many patients remember little of the procedure afterwards, though this varies.

No judgement

However long it's been since your last visit, our team will go at your pace.

How it works

  1. 1

    Sedation consultation

We talk through your worries, check your medical history and confirm whether sedation is safe and suitable for you.

  2. 2

    Preparing for the day

You'll need a responsible adult to bring you, take you home and stay with you afterwards. We'll give you written instructions.

  3. 3

    Your treatment

Sedation is given and monitored throughout by trained staff while your dentist carries out treatment.

  4. 4

    Recovery

You rest at the practice until you're ready to go home. Plan to take the rest of the day off and avoid driving.

What our patients say

Fantastic dentist!

So caring and considerate, just perfect. Always puts me at ease as soon as I walk into the room.
D.M.

Makes me feel at ease!

Also an extremely anxious patient here, first met him years ago at an NHS dentist. I have moved to 3 different practices as he has to ensure I can stay under his care. He makes me feel completely at ease and is such a lovely gentleman. An absolute credit to the practice and profession! Thank you Mr Parker.

Great dentist!

Awww Mr Parker. A great dentist.

Your questions, answered

Will I be asleep?

No. Conscious sedation is not a general anaesthetic. You'll be deeply relaxed but still able to respond to your dentist.

Is sedation safe?

Sedation is very safe when given by trained teams following national guidelines, but it isn't suitable for everyone. We assess your medical history carefully at your consultation.

Can I drive afterwards?

No. You must not drive, operate machinery, drink alcohol or sign important documents for at least 24 hours after sedation, and you'll need an adult escort home.

What treatments can I have with sedation?

Sedation can be used for most treatments, from fillings and extractions to implants and teeth in a day.

Sedation is only provided after a consultation and medical assessment. Your dentist will explain the benefits, risks and alternatives before you decide.
